NIELSEN: TAIWAN IS THE SECOND AND THIRD MOST POPULAR DESTINATION FOR CHINESE AND HONG KONG OUTBOUND TRAVELERS

MAINLAND CHINESE MORE MOTIVATED TO TRAVEL IN THIS CHESE NEW YEAR THAN CONSUMERS FROM TAIWAN AND HONG KONG

Do you have travel plan in the 2009 Chinese New Year break? According to the Nielsen Greater China Travel Intentions Online Survey conducted online in Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, more than half of Mainland Chinese netizens (53%) said they planned to take either domestic (42%) or outbound travel (11%) during the CNY period:. Taiwanese are also motivated to get moving these holidays, with 46 percent planning to travel this CNY. The majority of respondents in Hong Kong, however, are choosing to holiday at home - only 35 percent of Hong Kong respondents said they will travel this CNY.

Both Taiwanese and Chinese prefer to have domestic trip during this CNY period. According to Nielsen Survey, 36 percent of Taiwanese respondents and 42 percent Chinese respondents who have travel intentions in the 2009 CNY said they plan to take domestic travel. 16 percent Taiwanese who have travel plan would like to have outbound trip.

What are the most popular destinations for consumers across Greater China three markets? According to Nielsen Survey, Japan is the most popular destination for Taiwanese travelers. 58% Taiwanese respondents who plan to have outbound trip claimed they want to visit Japan, one-third plan to visit China (including Hong Kong and Macau), and 26 percent intent to travel to Korea. For Hong Kong consumers, the top 3 outbound destinations are Mainland China (35%), Japan (15%) and Taiwan (13%).

For outbound travel destinations for Chinese, Hong Kong is the most popular destination with 6 in ten outbound travel consumers planning a visit. Taiwan’s popularity as a CNY destination (29%) becomes the 2nd most popular outbound travel destination. This is good news for the Taiwanese travel industry: 95 percent of consumers surveyed said that they are aware of the China – Taiwan direct flight and only 21 percent of respondents would not consider visiting Taiwan within the next two years. More than half (56%) said they definitely will or probably will go to Taiwan in 2 years, and among these, 83 percent said they will directly fly to Taiwan. The Top 5 most popular outbound travel destinations for mainland Chinese also include Macau (23%), Japan (15%) and Korea (13%).

Among those Taiwanese who planned to visit Mainland China, Shanghai is the top destination with 61 percent of them planning to travel, followed closely by Hong Kong (56%). The Olympic City, Beijing, is the third top destination in China for Taiwanese outbound travellers.

Among those mainland Chinese who planned to travel domestically, Sanya is the top destination with 21 percent of them planning to have a warm Chinese New Year on beautiful beaches, followed closely by Lijiang (17%). On the other hand, the cold weather doesn’t stop Chinese consumers’ passion for Beijing (16%).
