Direct flights from Taiwan to Mainland China have become a subject of some discussion in the wake of the recently held 2008 Boao Forum for Asia annual conference. According to a Nielsen Cross-Strait Direct Flight Online Consumer Opinion Survey released today, over a quarter (28%) of Taiwan’s online population say they have visited China in the past and, if both parties on either side of the Strait decided to implement direct travel links, more than two thirds (71%) of Taiwanese online population – equating to around 5.5 million people – say they would like to travel to China.

“A direct flight policy presents a huge business opportunity for airline companies and travel agencies alike,” said Jennifer Tsai, Executive Director, The Nielsen Company Taiwan Ltd. “According to the Nielsen survey, one third of Taiwan Internet users said they ‘definitely will go’ to China if a direct flight policy was introduced, and the percentages increased with age. A third of 25 to 34 year-olds said they ‘will visit China’ while the figure jumps to over half (58%) for 45 to 49 year-olds. Moreover, direct air travel to China was highly attractive to four out of five (84%) of white collar working Taiwanese,” commented Ms. Tsai.

According to Nielsen, Taiwanese opinions differ on the subject according to gender and age. One fifth of male respondents claim they travel to the Mainland for business purposes, while less than one in 10 females visit China for business. And the frequency of visiting China increases by age. 19 percent of 45 to 49 year-old Internet users claim to have made two to five Mainland business trips in the past and close to one tenth say they have made more than ten business trips.

And who would be the Taiwanese’ airline of choice for direct flights? Eva Air ranked as the airline of choice for 71 percent of respondents, according to the Nielsen Cross Strait Direct Flight Online Consumer Opinion Survey.
